About Me
Though it’s nearly impossible to boil an entire personality into a few distinct traits and ideas, I’ll try my best to give you a good snapshot of both my professional and personal side below!
The Professional Side
I’m Gracie Straznickas, a human-centered design PhD looking for work in the Chicago area. I’m trained both quantitative and qualitative methods, and excel at team management, presentation, design, research, and analysis.
Throughout my education, I’ve developed a strong foundation for analyzing the complexities of the human experience. Specializing in mixed methods approaches, I’ve honed both my qualitative insights and quantitative skills to not only seek answers, but to articulate them in clearcut ways that stay true to the user’s story. While I have always been an empathetic person, my journey has only grown that perspective as I see just how varied any one person’s story can be.
My empathic side extends beyond just users, including collaboration with my teammates and clients too. For example, in my undergraduate game development work, I took initiative to learn coding alongside my assigned role in art, resulting in more effective communication and understanding with my programmers. My general understanding of the work that each team member must do in creating a game led me to take a more managerial role as I could effectively discuss what was possible without asking for something out of scope. I’ve since led over a dozen multidisciplinary teams all on tight schedules with dependencies on deliverables, developing ways to translate technical work clearcut, client ready outcomes.
I bring a human-centered lens to whatever I do, whether it be conducting interviews, running surveys, or analyzing data. I focus on translating complex findings into actionable insights, all with a deep commitment to understanding people—not just what they do, but what they value and need. My work has always begun with people, not assumptions, and that continues to ground my work in whether it be research, analysis, or design.
The Personal Side
I’m Creative
I love being creative and I dabble in just about every avenue possible whether it be drawing, painting, sculpting, making music, writing, etc.
At 16 I had around 16k followers on my blog (though I eventually deleted it because I wanted to focus on the upcoming shift to college)

Academic at Heart
I always love learning new things. Many know me as someone who just knows random facts about everything—I can’t resist a good deep dive!
This love for learning is obviously part of what led to my getting a PhD. Even after completing it, I still can’t help but seek answers out; there’s just so much to know!
Creatures are Important Reflections
I’ve got a deep love for the “othered” creatures of media like monsters, robots, and aliens. Not only are they often depictions of “othered” people in our current society, but in so many cases they are the real underdogs.
I do my best to look at all angles of any situation, and I’ll always fight for the misunderstood!
I Love Animals
Animals are my happy place; be it interacting with them or just observing them from afar. They all have such vivid and distinct personalities. Ask me for a random animal fact whenever you want and I’ll be happy to oblige!
My first big experience with volunteer work was in 2008 when my club and I hosted a carnival for our school. We made $1000 to donate to the animal shelter, which was pretty neat.
Humor and Play are Essential
Humor is in my soul; I love making others laugh. Being wacky, doing improv, having whimsy, it’s part of what makes being human so fun. This of course includes playing videogames and exploring fun new ways to play.
I attended both computer camp and second city classes as a kid to help hone these playful skills.
A Helping Hand
I genuinely love helping others. Being there for someone, talking with them, whatever it may be, I want to do good in the world, especially for those around me.
If my previous struggles can create comforting words of understanding, or actionable results for someone else, they can be my strengths too!
My Dog
I’m not sure where else to put this but it felt very important. Please enjoy these pictures of my dog. He is very goofy and I adore him.
